As a geologist, author and publisher, I know the value of being able to write well. However, this is one area that we all need to improve so that we can discuss issues using more than the "60 second soundbite" made so famous by the media and politicians in our society.
For example, I just finished a downloadable eBook entitled Tired of Making Your Utility Rich?, A Solar Homeowner Explains When and Why You Need Solar on Your Home. This eBook is designed to explain the reasons why solar is viable today and help homeowners make the decision to install solar PV (photovoltaic) panels on their home and generate their own electricity.
In this eBook, I discuss energy use and demand both on a global and national level. I discuss the topic of peak oil and why that energy prices are going to continue to skyrocket. This in itself is an excellent reason to install a solar PV system immediately.
In addition, I explain why the electrical transmission grid is failing and can not be trusted. Try running your home without electricity on a regular basis. Our entire lifestyle is dependent on a stable supply of electricity and water. Without either, our society rapidly falls apart.
A good example of this dependence is the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Electricity, water and sewage systems were all shut down for an extended period of time. We still haven't recovered completely from that disaster, even though a full year has passed with extensive federal, state and local aid, and thousands of volunteers.
Another example is Iraq. The electrical grid, oil supply systems and water and wastewater systems operate intermittently at best. The society in Iraq seems to be collapsing.
What is happening in Iraq is a model of what could happen in America, if Americans do not make themselves more aware of the issues and stop accepting the 60 second pat political answers presented by our political candidates and elected officials. We need an extended discussion between concerned and aware citizens about the issues of terrorism, water and energy, with out the rhetoric, political barbs, 60 second pat answers and extreme left vs. right antagonism so prevalent today.
Without citizens becoming aware of critical issues, that are actually survival issues for this country, we are doomed to continue having the political choices and leadership that we have had over the last 16 years. In my opinion, with a more aware citizenry, none of the candidates for president or congress would be tolerated in the upcoming elections, because they refuse to put the interest of America above their own self interest, power and money. In essence, they refuse to become aware and lead.
Because we as citizens, are not informed and aware, America is quickly becoming irrelevant in this flat world among powerhouse economies like China and India.
